Обессоливание воды до концентрации, установленной для питьевых целей.
[ ГОСТ 25151-82]К настоящему времени разработано и реализовано большое количество процессов опреснения солёных вод, основанных на различных принципах отделения пресной воды от солей: химическом (ионный обмен), термической дистилляции, вымораживании, мембранном и других.
Основными процессами обессоливания морской воды являются:- MSF (Multi Stage Flash - многоступенчатое мгновенное вскипание) – 25,7% мирового рынка;
- RO (Reverse Osmosis - обратный осмос) -61,1%;
- MED (Multi Effect Distillation - многоступенчатая пленочная дистилляция) – 8,3%.

Термин «Атомное опреснение» (Nuclear Desalination) трактуется МАГАТЭ, как получение питьевой воды из морской в установке, использующей ядерный реактор в качестве источника энергии (электрической и/или тепловой) для процесса опреснения. Установка может быть предназначена исключительно для производства питьевой воды или для одновременной выработки электроэнергии и производства пиъевой воды; в последнем случае на производство воды затрачивается лишь часть энергии, вырабатываемой реактором. В любом случае термин "атомный опреснитель " обозначает комплексную установку, состоящую из ядерного реактора и опреснительной системы, размещающихся на общей площадке, причем энергия для работы опреснительной системы производится непосредственно в данной установке. Сюда относятся также общие или в различной степени совместно используемые оборудование, персонал и сооружения.
